Police apprehend man with guns at Smith High School, believe he had a relationship to intended target

Police Take Individual into Custody at Smith High School

GREENSBORO, NC (Dec. 3, 2018) – At approximately 12:40 pm an individual identified as Steve Brantley Spence, BM/29, of Norfolk, Virginia entered Smith High School located at 2407 S. Holden Rd. The subject entered the cafeteria and was immediately questioned by school employees. The school employees called for a school lockdown and the subject left the cafeteria and was confronted by the School Resource officer who observed multiple weapons. The individual turned and ran from the officer but was apprehended after a brief foot pursuit by the School Resource Officer and assisting officers.

Spence was armed with two hand guns and was carrying a backpack with boxes of extra ammunition. A stolen vehicle was also located that contained another weapon. Police believe Spence’s intended target at the school was someone he had a personal relationship with. Spence is wanted on several charges in Virginia including Assault on a Family Member, Grand Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, Grand Larceny Stolen Property and Strangling Another Causing Wound or Injury.
