City Files Petition to Release Body-Worn Camera Footage

GREENSBORO, NC (November 30, 2018) – The City of Greensboro is in the process of filing a petition with the Guilford County Superior Court requesting the release of body-worn camera footage of the Greensboro Police Department’s involvement with Marcus Dion Smith on September 8, 2018.

Due to the multitude of factors that led to tragic circumstances for Mr. Smith, detailed in the NC Department of Health and Human Services Medical Examiner report, the City of Greensboro believes there is a compelling public interest to share the video.

As previously stated, per Greensboro Police Department protocol, the State Bureau of Investigation was contacted immediately following the incident in September to conduct an independent investigation. Additional details will be provided after the court’s ruling has been finalized.
