GCS Choice Showcase Reveals Options
Families can learn about schools with magnet and specialty programs on January 20
Greensboro, N.C. – By the time a student graduates from Jones Elementary, they can converse in Spanish.
At Brown Summit Middle, a rigorous academic curriculum includes three years of Latin, which aids them in PSAT/SAT preparation and builds a foundation for future language studies.
And at Penn-Griffin School for the Arts, creative students can pursue traditional interests such as visual arts or dance – or something as rare as learning to play the harp.
Families can learn about these and other unique academic programs at a Choice Showcase on Saturday, January 20. The annual fair will be held from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center. Event and parking are free.
GCS is a nationwide leader in magnet and choice schools. The district houses 45 choice schools with 54 programs that focus on various themes, such as performing arts, STEM, single-gender education, global studies, language immersion and International Baccalaureate.
Superintendent Sharon L. Contreras said she is proud to lead a district that offers options that range from neighborhood schools with long-standing traditions to small specialized programs designed to reach a specific type of student.
“One of the strengths of our district is our ability to offer unique school environments to fit every student and every need,” she said.
Dibrelle Tourret, Executive Director of Advanced Learners, said the fair gives families the opportunity to learn what the district offers from pre-k through high school.
“Some parents who come might not have children enrolled in school yet, but they’re eager to learn about the options available. Even if a child is already enrolled in an elementary or middle school magnet program, it’s never too early to explore their high school options,” she said.
The application window for choice schools is Jan. 20-Feb. 16. Information about choice school programs and the application process can be found here
