A better way on Greensboro police body camera video

GREENSBORO, NC — Greensboro police are refusing to release video captured by police body-worn cameras. This has prompted Mayor Nancy Vaughan and City Council representative Justin Outling to propose policy changes, but their proposals are convoluted, unnecessarily costly and would politicize access to these videos keeping them still mostly off limits. There is a better way. City Council should reject the police department’s hijacking of these videos as their sole domain and reclaim the purpose City Council explicitly stated when it first unanimously approved the use of these cameras: For “enhancing public legitimacy and transparency.”
