GREENSBORO, N.C. – In North Carolina every state employee gets the same basic health insurance options, but each agency can offer its own supplemental plans like life insurance, dental, disability. Legislative auditors found all these random supplemental plans means little oversight and that costs employees and you the taxpayer.
Auditors raise three key concerns. First, auditors found 70 percent of agencies don’t know if the plans offered are a good value. There was no proof the plans went through a bid process.
Second, auditors believe the supplemental plans encourage employees you pay for to skip out on work. State employees already get disability insurance from the state retirement system.
