Commissioners OKish with State’s Sales Tax Compromise

Guilford County government may have dodged a bullet when it comes to the sales tax distribution method in the new state budget.  However, county residents weren’t quite so fortunate: Those who live in Guilford County – and in other urban counties across the state – will pay sales taxes on more things than before, but, unlike those who live in rural counties, Guilford County residents won’t benefit from any of that additional sales tax revenue.

Baseball Stadium Swings at Tax Penalties – Gets Reduction

Greensboro Baseball LLC, which owns Grasshoppers stadium and the Greensboro Grasshoppers baseball team, came before the Guilford County Board of Equalization and Review (E&R) recently to ask that board for forgiveness on about $35,000 in penalties associated with six years of unpaid back taxes on the stadium at 408 Bellemeade St. in downtown Greensboro.  The stadium owners didn’t get everything they wanted but the county did agree to knock off $10,000 on the penalties.

Dam on Animal Shelter Scandal Info Starting To Collapse

Former Guilford County Animal Shelter Director Marsha Williams and two other former shelter workers were indicted last week by the Davidson County district attorney’s office.  However, that was just the start of the bad news for Williams and other shelter workers who are still under investigation by law enforcement in both counties – and still being scrutinized by state and federal authorities as well.

County Promises To Keep Future Shelter On Tight Leash

In order to assure oversight of a much maligned Guilford County Animal Shelter, where oversight has apparently been non-existent for years, Guilford County is preparing to change the way it handles animal services and those changes are likely to include the creation of a new county department to run the shelter, the establishment of an oversight board and the merger of Guilford County Animal Control into the new department.
