Parking Deck Mural Project Begins August 1
GREENSBORO (July 28, 2017) – In August, contemporary artist Daas
The 80-foot-tall murals were one of the Participatory Budgeting Cycle One projects approved by District 3 residents. The City solicited mural artists to submit designs. Daas’s work was chosen by selection committee members Liz Busch of the Art Alliance, Altina Layman and Victoria Ball of the Greensboro Cultural Center Advisory Council, Stephen Turner of Capitol Associates, Cheryl Stewart from the Greater Greensboro Community Foundation Public Art Endowment, and Phillip Marsh, a PB Budget Delegate and creative director at Rockers Print Shop.
Marsh, who was part of the PB Arts & Culture committee, said PB Budget Delegates wanted to introduce art that was accessible to the community.
“Art stimulates growth as a catalyst or supplement to any community and creates community pride that all citizens of any economic background feel gratified to call that community home,” Marsh said. “When art work on an international level is produced in your community it serves two purposes: to create community pride and to serve as a marketing tool that this city is forward-thinking.”
Daas is known for his colorful, geometric paintings and murals. His work can be seen in cities across the globe, from St. Petersburg, Florida, to Shanghai, China.
Pedestrians should avoid the area around the parking deck beginning August 1. Portions of the sidewalk will be closed while the murals are being painted.
