Grimsley Senior Receives National Merit Scholarship
Mary Helen Wood was awarded $2,500 from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation

Greensboro, N.C. – A third GCS senior has been awarded a competitive National Merit Scholarships by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

Mary Helen Wood, a senior at Grimsley High, received $2,500 from the NMSC. The organization selected 2,500 scholars to receive the award out of a pool of more than 15,000 outstanding finalists. The winners in each state are judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

Wood plans to attend Duke University in the fall. She says she’s honored by the selection, and is grateful to her teachers, from elementary to high school, who helped her get to where she is today.

“They’ve taught me the skills I need to achieve in classroom. More importantly, they taught me to look beyond numbers and grades to measure my own success and that of others. I’ll take those lessons with me to college and wherever comes next,” said Wood.

This is the second announcement of winners in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. GCS had two scholars receive corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards announced last month. Additional awards will be announced later this summer.
