College Men’s Golf Results – Guilford Sits Third Halfway Through NCAA Division III Championships

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – Guilford College shot Wednesday’s second-low score and climbed into third place halfway through the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships. The Quakers’ five-over par 293 on the Mission Inn Resort and Club’s Las Colinas Course moved Guilford up five spots into sole possession of third place in the 42-team field.

Top-ranked Huntingdon College maintained its first-round lead with Wednesday’s low score on Las Colinas, a three-over-par 291. The Hawks have a 36-hole total of 584, four strokes better than second –place Wittenberg University. The Tigers had Wednesday’s low score (290) on the tournament’s second course, El Campeon, and sit five strokes in front of Guilford. Greensboro College (300-297-597) and the University of Texas-Tyler (296-305-601) rank fourth and fifth, respectively.

Huntingdon senior Addison Lambeth (Browns Summit, N.C./Wesleyan (Appalachian State)) maintained his two-stroke edge over the 215-man field with an even-par 72 Wednesday on Las Colinas. Lambeth is three-under for the tournament (141), two strokes ahead of Guilford’s Josh Hill (Superior, Colo./Monarch) and Wittenberg’s Cameron Willis. Hill had two birdies in his round of 72 Wednesday on Las Colinas, while Willis shot a one-over 73 on El Campeon. Wittenberg’s Garrett Brickley, Huntingdon’s Stephen Shephard and Methodist University’s Craig Decato sit three strokes off the lead at 144.

The teams played under clear skies with a light breeze and temperatures that warmed to the low-90s Wednesday. Guilford was one of the first groups off on the par-72, 6,888-yard Las Colinas Course, which played over a stroke easier than the par-72, 6,844-yard El Campeon in Tuesday’s opening round and nearly two strokes easier Wednesday. The championships’ remaining two rounds will be played Thursday and Friday on El Campeon by the 18 teams that survived Wednesday’s cut. Five individuals not on the 18 teams will also play on.

Coach Justin Tereshko’s Quakers posted their third-lowest round of the season and the event’s fourth-best score Wednesday. In addition to Hill’s even-par round, rookie Kell Graham (Matthews, N.C./Charlotte Christian) carded a one-over 73 that included an eagle-three on the par-five 12th hole. Junior Harrison Frye (High Point, N.C./High Point Central) rebounded from an opening-round 81 with a 74 Wednesday, a total matched by senior teammate Ty Palmer (Kernersville, N.C./Forsyth Country Day). Guilford’s Zachary Evens shot 78 Wednesday.

The Quakers are grouped with Huntingdon and Wittenberg for Thursday’s third round. The teams start from El Campeon’s first tee at 9:39 a.m. The tournament concludes Friday. Live scoring for the final two rounds is available at NCAA.com or Golfstat.com.

Guilford is ranked 17th in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches’ Poll and 19th in the current Golfstat.com NCAA Division III Relative Rankings. The Quakers are playing in the championships for the 22nd time in 26 years of Division III membership. Guilford won the event in 2002 and in 2005, when Mission Inn Resort and Club also hosted the tournament.
